Pros

Overall, this is a great company with a strong workplace culture and amazing coworkers. Management, especially direct managers, genuinely cared about their teams and always tried to improve the work experience. Amazing Benefits!

Cons

A typical day involved multiple meetings, many of which could have been handled via email. Frequent interruptions and context switching made it difficult to focus on primary tasks. There was a lot of after-hours work, including 4 AM releases every two weeks, and at times, you were expected to work overnight and then a full shift the next day. I was often called into work while on PTO as well, which made achieving a work-life balance challenging. Another major issue is the lack of a proper onboarding process for new employees to understand the complexities of the insurance industry. This responsibility often fell on the veteran IT team members, who had to teach the business side to others in addition to their primary roles. They attempt to follow Agile methodologies, but deadlines are often pre-decided or ignored when developers provide estimations. Horizontal teams are overburdened and understaffed to meet the demands of the vertical teams, which creates additional stress. Upper IT leadership was difficult to access, resistant to alternative opinions, and prioritized profitable teams over others. Promotions typically required proving yourself by doing the work of the next level for years before being considered.

Pros

RLI has a strong employee-ownership culture and a work environment where people are trusted to take ownership of what they do. The company is relatively flat, which gives employees visibility, access to leadership, and a better understanding of how their work affects the broader organization. Senior management is approachable in a way I have not experienced at other companies, and there is a real effort to listen to employee feedback through direct conversations, exit interviews, and companywide surveys. I also appreciate working with people who care about doing their jobs well and understand that their performance and conduct affect the company as a whole. For employees who are self-starters, think strategically, and take pride in their work, RLI can be a very positive place to build a career.

Cons

Because RLI is relatively flat and gives people a lot of ownership, it may not be the best fit for someone who wants a highly structured environment, frequent direction, or a clearly mapped career path at every step. Advancement and development often require self-advocacy, patience, resourcefulness, and a willingness to look for opportunities rather than waiting for them to be handed to you. That is not necessarily a negative, but it can be an adjustment depending on what type of environment someone is used to.
