Pros

RLI equips and incentivizes employees to have an ownership mindset. It is a flat organization with skilled people who are generous with their time and trained to seek win-win outcomes for customers and employees. It is a great place to work!

Cons

One of RLI’s greatest strengths is its dedication to empowering product groups to take ownership of all aspects of operations, including technology. At times this has served us well. However, it also has led to silos and inefficiencies. Thankfully, leaders acknowledge this and are committed to pursuing more holistic processes and supporting technologies.

Pros

RLI has a strong employee-ownership culture and a work environment where people are trusted to take ownership of what they do. The company is relatively flat, which gives employees visibility, access to leadership, and a better understanding of how their work affects the broader organization. Senior management is approachable in a way I have not experienced at other companies, and there is a real effort to listen to employee feedback through direct conversations, exit interviews, and companywide surveys. I also appreciate working with people who care about doing their jobs well and understand that their performance and conduct affect the company as a whole. For employees who are self-starters, think strategically, and take pride in their work, RLI can be a very positive place to build a career.

Cons

Because RLI is relatively flat and gives people a lot of ownership, it may not be the best fit for someone who wants a highly structured environment, frequent direction, or a clearly mapped career path at every step. Advancement and development often require self-advocacy, patience, resourcefulness, and a willingness to look for opportunities rather than waiting for them to be handed to you. That is not necessarily a negative, but it can be an adjustment depending on what type of environment someone is used to.
