Pros
Some of the people work there were really friendly. They were willing to help you out with some of the most complicated business logic questions you may have. Being in the financial sector, your software engineering skills are not important at all but what you know about how the business works is crucial. You also get to learn a lot about the Canadian securities system such as how mutual fund works and things like that. Might become handy if you want to move into the financial sector as a software developer where financial knowledge in fixed-income, equity and FX are often helpful.
Cons
Profanity, the single biggest problem for me. Maybe just the guys there, maybe it was just some of them but I have heard the most swear words in a day while I was working there. They don't seemed to care all that much though they do hold back a little bit when there were ladies around. Micromanagement, can you imagine that you have to fill out a time card with details of how much time you spent on each task you were given? With each project, you are given a set amount of time that the management "think" you will need to finish it. At the end of each day, you have to distribute all your time, 8 hours, among all the different tasks that you have so that the management knows how much time you spent on each one. Oh, did I mention that the time scale is down to 5 minutes? Yes, if you spent 5 minutes getting a coffee, you better hope that you could squeeze that into one of your active projects. No promotion, no bonus and no nothing. All the team leads there have worked there since the beginning. When I say beginning, I mean since the inception of the company 20 years ago. It has a very flat hierarchy, CEO -> Director -> Team Leads -> You. So you know there is no corporate ladder to climb. Old technologies. This seems to be common in the financial sector, at least I wasn't asked to use COBOL at least. The code base was from ages ago and things were very organized or disorganized, depending on how you look at it. You see functions with thousands of lines long, with layers of if and else statements one after the other. Working there, your programming skills will deteriorate to writing if statements and while loops.
