Pros

Smart colleagues and interesting work, although very bureaucratic at times.

Cons

Workload is very dependent on what department you are in or what your skills are. Hiring doesn’t seem to keep up with project demand. You’re expected to be oversold to clients and hope it works out. Surprisingly, lack of consistent processes for a big organization. Culture of cancelling PTO, working on PTO, working late at night, working weekends. Urgency culture abound. I hear some departments are better but all the work/life balance is just talk to me. I meet with my boss less than once a month and work on no projects with them. Nobody will advocate for you, you have to do that yourself and feel comfortable saying no repeatedly. Too many to name… could go on and on about how poor the staffing management is.

Pros

Colleagues were usually respectful, hardworking, and competent. Pre-Covid, the RTP campus was a vibrant and collaborative working environment. Some of the (mostly Federal) contracts provided for interesting research and work.

Cons

Perhaps put too many eggs in USAID contract and Federal social sciences baskets. Org's strength used to be hard sciences. RTI's strength was its organizational culture which was severely undermined by the decision to allow almost anyone to work remotely Upper management bends too much to a vocal and political few, helping to sour an excellent working environment. Many faithful and valuable employees now distrust senior management.
