Pros

The only good thing? You get paid very well. Let's see - other than that - can't think of anything.

Cons

Republic Services is a company that is struggling to find an identity. They introduced a new brand last year but the teams responsible for carrying it out have no clue what they are doing. The corporate culture is horrible. People just sit in their offices all day and stare at the computer. They like to keep things like a library – cold and quiet. When I started here, I didn’t receive any training. Instead, I was told to “Jump in and figure it out.” And, as it turns out, my supervisor is one of the most miserable and unkind people I've ever met. I have never worked for a company that encourages employees to do so little with their skills and expertise. Management at the corporate office has no idea how to leverage the talents and skills of their employees. This company spends so much time recruiting top talent from major companies. But once those people get here, they see that the company is a dead end. There is no innovation here. They rolled out this mantra, “Our customers come first!” which they are attempting to get everyone onboard. Welcome to the 21st century, Republic Services! That is a given in any other company. They also introduced this diversity council, thinking they can fool employees into believing they are a “culturally diverse and inclusive culture.” Not so! The entire committee is made up of senior-level white men who sit around collecting fat paychecks for doing absolutely nothing. This may be one of the largest companies in Phoenix, but they act like a mom and pop shop.

Pros

The pay is competitive, especially with overtime opportunities, and there is strong potential to earn a solid income for employees willing to work hard. The job also provides steady work and consistent hours, which can be valuable for drivers looking for financial stability.

Cons

The work/life balance for roll-off drivers can be difficult, particularly when working weekends. Drivers are often scheduled in a way that keeps hours under 60 while still requiring Saturday work, rather than being given an additional recovery day during the week. With the level of physical labor involved, one day off is often not enough to properly recover. There is also a heavy emphasis on “swinging” containers. While swings can make sense when locations are far apart, many are scheduled for stops that are very close together and provide little operational benefit. Swings add significantly more physical labor for drivers and, in some cases, can actually take longer than traditional service methods. Over time, consistently working 55–60 hour weeks under these conditions can lead to fatigue and burnout.
