Pros

Union contract support has given decent pay and benefits. Good job security.

Cons

Long hours with mountains of overtime every year. The management in our Hennepin facility is directly focused on production. Safety is plastered all over the walls ,but when a job needs to be done every procedure is thrown out the window. Excessive smoking of our combustion furnaces cause great concern of health risks for any one in the plant or honestly in the area. New gas monitors have been added and every time the alarm goes off no warning or exit procedure for any employee or general contractor is given. More often than not the supervisors will actually just open the breaker to the gas monitors because it's a "nuisance". Millions of dollars thrown at system replacement and zero training or guidance offered. All ash system replacement has made every work day a nightmare. Every day you must put yourself in the line of fire to break up giant boulders formed in ash hoppers. Temperatures of ash employees are put in front of will melt your boots and burn off PPE. Scary how quickly shift supervisors will promote employees To deal with the huge turnover rate and absolutely turn a blind eye let the most inexperienced human beings work with dangerous ash.

Pros

The shift supervisor role consists of busy days with a lot of varying priorities. You are responsible for emissions regulation, work permits, specialized permits, managing changing plant conditions, and administrative personnel requirements. This can be a high-octane role but has a more relaxed period on night shift and when outages aren't occurring (planned shutdowns for maintenance). Expect to drive plant performance and employee development. Many opportunities for professional and personal development if you put the time in.

Cons

The plant culture will play a huge role in your quality of life, since most of your time will be at the plant. This can be good or bad. Quite a few managers do not engage or develop personnel due to various qualities. You will have to do the leg work in fostering a change for personnel development.
