Pros

Pay and benefits are above average Work is challenging

Cons

Senior Management is focused on Lean Manufacturing to a fault, with no concept of the practical aspects of running a facility. The entire senior management team consists of former GE employees, and they bring the toxic GE culture with them. The company is cut throat and the managers enjoy publicly humiliating and belittling employees. The facilities are old and in need of maintenance, but there is little interest in investing in them, making the place largely unsafe. As a manager, you get asked to do things that are unethical. There is too much of a DEI push. Managers will interfere in the day to day decisions of their direct report managers and make personnel decisions around their managers. I left the company because my manager and HR were interfering too much in my business preventing me from executing the goals that were given to me when I started. As a manager, you get no support from your managers. They belittle and intimidate you rather than motivate you. They manage by fear. Long-tenured employees have been pushed out without getting taken care of (medical bridge, retirement, etc). Bottom line - culture is toxic, management does not support personnel, workplace is generally unsafe due to lack of investment. Stay away.

Pros

The shift supervisor role consists of busy days with a lot of varying priorities. You are responsible for emissions regulation, work permits, specialized permits, managing changing plant conditions, and administrative personnel requirements. This can be a high-octane role but has a more relaxed period on night shift and when outages aren't occurring (planned shutdowns for maintenance). Expect to drive plant performance and employee development. Many opportunities for professional and personal development if you put the time in.

Cons

The plant culture will play a huge role in your quality of life, since most of your time will be at the plant. This can be good or bad. Quite a few managers do not engage or develop personnel due to various qualities. You will have to do the leg work in fostering a change for personnel development.
