Engineering school - PhD Graduate Student Rice University Employee Review

Pros

Least amount of required teaching work, the compensation is more than enough to support daily expenses (housing, food, commute). School/department encourages student traveling and presenting at conferences (both domestic and international) and offers lots of funding opportunities. Lots of local companies (e.g. oil and gas) give out very well-paid and meaningful summer internship positions.

Cons

Houston turns to be very hot in the summer, and I recommend getting a summer internship at somewhere cooler.

Pros

Good communications, good boss, good location

Cons

No scope for raises. Receive silly plaques to commemorate work anniversaries rather than raise.
