Pros

The topic of the job is very interesting. Some of the tooling for debugging embedded systems is very interesting (see also the disadvantages section).

Cons

Toxic work environment, Incompetent line/middle management. Lack of software engineering capability in the organisation, yet refusing to listen to recommendations. No real feedback culture, only lip service to it. On more than one occassion, and in total seriousness, i saw my arguments misrepresented, and distorted, and that that distorted argument made ridicule, as if that were my original argument. This is basically the strawman argument fallacy. This made me feel like “games” were played in the Berne’s transactional psychological sense. And of course nobody likes being ridiculed for things he/she did not even say. I am made to feel like I am simply a whiner, and complain for the sake of complaining. To the best of my ability, I try to show facts and arguments to support why the issues matter. These seem to be met with silence. For a company that makes good tools in the physical world, they seem to accept using terrible tools in the digital world for their embedded development (I am not allowed to give specifics unfortunately). Only about 5% of the job is about computer vision, 40% is wrestling with instabilities of a work in progress, with few test equipments shared among too many people, meaning you simply sit around waiting, wasting money and time.

Pros

Work-life balance is great and getting an internship extended is very common.

Cons

Not on the cutting edge of tech at all and they seem to move slowly much like the rest of the auto industry.

Pros

Google work environment. Good people.

Cons

Our department suffered the cuts of automotive downturns and outsourcing work after department mergers. I would have stayed until retirement for another 10 or 15 years.
