Pros
Note: The thing with Quicken Loans/Rocket Companies more than any of my previous employers is that your experience is going to heavily depend on where in the company you’re working so keep that in mind reading this review, for this role I worked in CE Operations. Also note that this review includes a mix of both on-site and COVID work environment (wfh) impressions. ----------------------------------- At a glance: -Can make some decent money without a College Degree (50K+) -Lots of perks -A solid culture with great coworkers -Big company so lots of room to move around -Non-client facing if you’re more introverted ----------------------------------- Pros: -The best thing about my role was that you could make a solid income without a college degree in a pretty good amount of time. At a starting pay of around $18 with lots of giveaways and bonuses plus occasional overtime you’ll find yourself making some decent money for not the hardest of work if you’re good at it. CE Ops is very liberal with promotions as well so you may be tapped to move up relatively quickly if you stand out. -One thing Quicken has always done well for the most part is hire good people that’ll be relatively easy to get along with. Every time I’ve gone to work for a company in the FOC (Family of Companies) I haven’t had any rough run-ins but I stayed away from the Bankers side where most people I knew ran into issues with co-workers/managers. The team leaders in my area during my time there were excellent. -In line with my previous pro, Rocket Companies is pretty good about hiring for attitude over qualifications in entry level roles versus a lot of other large employers especially in the SE Michigan. They are big on culture (called ISMs). -My department was production, and they followed the general rule in that as long as you hit your numbers your Team Leaders will more or less give you full autonomy over your workday, and especially once you hit Senior Doc Specialist which you can do in about a year when I was there. -When on site you get a bunch of little added perks like discounts for stores in the area as well as access to arcades and snacks like popcorn and slushies. If you're a weight watcher beware, though with Covid I heard a lot of that stuff got removed from the offices.
Cons
At a glance: -Long hours -Churn and burn work structure, high turnover -Open environment is not for everyone/lots of distractions -The work itself can be boring or mindless for some -Skills are not transferable -Randomized nature of work is not accounted for in your metrics -Voluntold Environment -You feel expendable ----------------------------------- Cons: -Job security was constantly threatened using coded language such as the tried and true “Do you want to work here?” shtick. -Leaders would regularly schedule mandatory meetings and gatherings during the time most of the team took lunch. -“Call Center” or Big Brother style environment and management. They keep track of every little thing you do right down to monitoring how long you are out of production. Doesn’t matter if you hit your hourly goal either you got to stay in production for a specified amount of time. -The job structure doesn’t lend itself well to downtime (much like a call center) so you can’t really do anything else other than the task at hand which can damage your eyes and wrists after doing it nonstop for 60 hr, 6 day work weeks during busy season. The job took up so much of your week you fall into a “live to work” box and it can wreck your mental health. -You’re held to metrics that you must hit hour-by-hour, which is fine it's a production role but know that the work itself is randomized and points are allocated based on the documents you get. For example, you may get a large document that takes up most of your time during the hour to complete but you’re still held to the same hourly goal regardless. -Seen but not heard style management, that they’ll listen to your suggestions but don’t expect any change when it comes to fundamental processes. If they do change they’ll either take credit for it themselves or you won’t get any additional compensation other than a pat on the back. You are silo'ed off from other teams and all of our feedback had to be filtered through management. They try to solicit feedback often but honestly in the Document Specialist role don’t waste your time. -Lots of “what you do matters” and “you’re so important” fluff leaders throw on you (and I mean a lot). Your mileage may vary but I found it to be very patronizing considering our work conditions relative to other departments in the organization/FOC. -A huge criticism of mine is the strong “voluntold” environment. It is mandatory for you to attend just about everything if you work in CE Ops vs. other (read: higher paying) branches of Rocket Companies/FOC; they cover it up in flowery language which again comes off as patronizing. It was an obnoxious double standard.
