Slow institution, but some people are great - Program Coordinator SF State University Employee Review

Pros

Lot of great colleagues who are fun to work with, lots of autonomy, pretty hard to get fired as long as you do your job. Cost of living increases, benefits, and union-led bonuses are cool.

Cons

Made up rules and challenging bureaucratic structure makes it hard to accomplish anything. Administrative support people are the backbone of the institution but oftentimes if one person leaves a team, everything falls apart. No promotion pathways, no raise structures. The salary you get when you first join, is the one you're stuck with and it doesnt matter how hard you work. Lots of people have the mindset of "this is the way it has always been," and dont question the legitimacy of these rules.

Pros

SFSU helps with all paperwork if you are an international and, in the lab I was working at, if you propose a project you have the freedom to implement it if you come up with a good plan for it.

Cons

Leadership sometimes would not set deadlines or would not encourage the team to go faster. It may not be a cons, but if you want a place where there is a structure with a current roadmap with deadlines and guidance in projects, it may impact you a little.
