Pros

There's a lot of fascinating research going on in a huge range of departments, so it's an exciting place to work. Also, since most SLAC employees are research staff, it seems like work-life balance is better than in many university-based labs (if I stayed in my building past 6 or so, I was often the only person who hadn't gone home).

Cons

It can be more difficult to get to know other graduate students at SLAC: the buildings are very spread out and there isn't much in the way of cross-pollination between departments. There's also an extra level of bureaucracy that comes with working at a government lab which can make things frustrating.

Pros

The opportunity to contribute to high-impact scientific research while collaborating with a dedicated, intelligent team was truly rewarding.

Cons

Workload consistently increased while resources simultaneously diminished, creating a lack of backup personnel for key roles, and significant operational silos between departments hindered cross-functional collaboration.
