Not a job for everyone! - Development Staff SMU (Southern Methodist University) Employee Review

Pros

The benefits-medical and tuition- at SMU are great and being able to get a degree tuition-free is a big part of its greatness. As an hourly employee, you work 37.5 but there are opportunities to work longer depending on the area you work in. If you live in a dual income household, this is a great job for you.

Cons

Long tenure equals management status without proven ability to manage a team; human resources are spotty in replying to important questions, nepotism/cronyism is rampant and favoritism is transparent; pay is terrible for what is expected of individuals; extremely political; inter departmental communication is horrible; merit increases cut in half to 1.5% this year, while president received a 16% raise;

Pros

Like the work I do and the people I work with. Activity fluctuates along the typical school calendar with the summer being slower.

Cons

You are expected to jump into change without asking questions. Even when a reason/justification on why or how you are doing something is met with a tone of "I don't care, Do what I said". Direct supervisor and colleagues are great and have your back. Many staff positions don't have a way to move up the career ladder.
