Pros
Excellent salary and benefits; worked with some very talented and good-hearted professionals and leaders; very good patient outcomes; many skilled, highly qualified, compassionate front-line employees
Cons
Salem Health’s Darwinistic work environment fosters a dog-eat-dog competitiveness and high turnover at manager and director level. The leadership team frequently uses “restructuring” for personal reasons to move high-performing leaders or professionals out of the organization. Senior executives maintain a veneer of transparency that makes it harder to see machinations for personal enrichment or power. Smart, highly qualified professionals who care about people and the community get out as soon as they can. I've since seen many Salem Health refugees at my current, highly recommended employer, Providence Health & Services.
