Pros

The name and salary range was enough to attract amazingly intelligent and talented people to work with. There was plenty of funding to conduct your research. You could set your own research direction within reason.

Cons

Hired professors to manage teams of people, when professors are notorious for having terrible management practices. Most have never had management training. There was no north-star research prerogative. Communication was poor between departments and other Samsung subsidiaries. I didn't even know who my HR person was if I needed to contact someone. The lab admin told me just to tell them, which is not ideal. My manager was vague in all feedback but highly opinionated. He couldn't determine a direction for the lab. He yelled at and berated people in team meetings. He micromanaged people and fired people he didn't like. He gave promotions and raises to people that agreed with him the most instead of to the high performers, and therefore lost many high performers.

Pros

Samsung is a place where you grow quickly — sometimes because you want to, sometimes because you have to. The pace is intense, but the learning curve is unmatched. The people are smart, driven, and genuinely care about building great products. The cross‑cultural environment can be challenging at times, but it also makes you a stronger communicator and operator. If you’re adaptable, curious, and energized by global teamwork, you’ll thrive here.

Cons

Priorities can shift overnight, and you need to be comfortable with constant change. Meetings with Korea can stretch your day. Some teams still operate with a top‑down culture, which may feel rigid if you’re used to Silicon Valley‑style autonomy.
