Pros

Employees get a decent discount (50%) on the large majority of the store, however the merchandise has to stay on the floor for at least 2 days before employees are allowed to purchase it. Some managers will enforce this, others won't. Regardless, you can really get some great deals with the discount. The job also offers great retail experience. You'll be doing a lot of physical work-- nothing too difficult, but still a lot of it. They have had me doing just about everything: cashiering, re-stocking the floor, hauling furniture, taking donations, etc. You will be prepared for just about anything in future retail jobs.

Cons

Unfortunately, the downsides of this job greatly outweigh the benefits. Overall it has been a pretty awful experience. My complaints may not be applicable to every Savers location, but I've seen similar concerns in other reviews, so I am not alone here. Awful, awful management. There is not any one particular manager that is significantly worse than any other manager in the store, but as a whole, the management team lacks any sort of coordination or communication. If you're confused as to what you should be doing when you clock in, you need to find a manager, otherwise they won't even know you're there. I once worked for 2 hours before the management team realized I even showed up to work. On the other hand, there has been more than one occasion where I've been asked to do 3 different things by 3 different managers within a very small window of time, and frankly, I'm not sure who I should be listening to. If you're a part-time worker such as myself (working about 30 hours/week), the managers will not hesitate to attempt to call you into work on your days off, even if it says you aren't working on the schedule. I don't have much of a problem with this, but getting called on 3/3 of your off days late in the day gets very old, very vast. I could go on about management for pages, but I digress. The store is severely under-staffed. This may speak for itself, but this makes the work feel that much more difficult, especially when the large majority of the people that have been hired don't want to do their jobs. I find myself constantly fixing employees' mistakes and covering people on their breaks, because there is simply nobody else there that can. This is also likely why I'm getting called in on the majority of my days off. This all has made me greatly question their hiring process. They have very a very sub-par training process. Once you are hired, they will have you take some computer modules, which will take a few hours, but are somewhat helpful. As far as hands-on training goes though, after being employed by them for a month, I have received a total of approximately 20-30 minutes of training, including using the register, which I had never done before and the modules didn't cover. Unless you have had retail experience prior to this (which I did not), you'll find yourself doing quite a bit of figuring out on your own, and for the first week or two it may or may not feel as if you were thrown into the fire a little bit.

Pros

Discounts. Incredible coworkers. App they use for scheduling and pay is really nice. Always left on time. Relaxed dress code. Schedules came out early.

Cons

Doctor's notes aren't "a valid excuse for absence" ??? You cannot buy anything in the store unless it's been there for two days. The managers are untrained. They refuse to trespass people (even though one customer threw glass onto the floor in a fit of rage and TWICE a fellow coworker's stalker came in and they just had them hide in the back) Most of the managers don't really help on the floor. They refused to put me on registers despite us needing the help and me not only having checkout experience, but I'm also fully trained and capable of being on the register. They pushed my male coworker to the registers even though he didn't have any previous retail experience way sooner than they did me. Schedules would be put out so early you couldn't request time off if something came up.
