Firmware development holds itself back for no good reason. The culture is driven by World Class Manufacturing, which does not translate 1:1 to software development, and software workflows suffer as a result. Questioning prior decisions, even the bad ones, makes you the enemy. The coding standards are anemic, but you will constantly be preached at about discipline, the same discipline that led to them gutting their coding standards.
