Pros
Company is pretty good otherwise. Doesn't sound like it from what I say below, but the work is fun when you don't have to deal with all the office politicking, and nasty management tactics to cheat you out of fair pay and company's need to spy on you. This bad stuff only happens a few times a year, I'm just real sensitive to it.
Cons
The company hiring, review, and promotion process are partial. If you are the managers favorite you get the big raise or promotion. It does not matter what you accomplish. And the company regularly shoots itself in the proverbial foot by giving employees subtle or not so subtle messages at review time that they are really incompetent and luck to have a job at all. This after you've worked your tail off and made significant contributions, I can't go into more detail without revealing who I am. Really ticks me off. As an example suddenly, just before review time, a work review meeting that you expect to be the normal process is without your prior knowledge attended by the most exacting mid level manager without your prior knowledge. My manager deliberately did this without informing me. He is a double crossing stinker! He invited this guy an hour before the meeting! Hey if you're were going to pull this stunt at least give me a heads up so that I can make a more formal preparation. This is not the first time this kind of urrr stuff has happened to me. Yet I see lame (boot lickers) workers who sloppy work I have had to deal with, given huge raises and promotions. Want to keep me around? Does'n't look like it. If your profits start declining it's managements fault entirely. Profits should only be rising dramatically in this economy. The other similar tactic is when I see a problem that is affecting the schedule and I pitch in to help out in addition to all my other responsibilities and then management puts together a 'surprise' meeting and lays into me! Not the guy whose job it is to do the task and has been working on it for weeks, but me, who just started trying to figure out what the problem was. I did figure it out shortly there after and management then thanked and gave credit to the guy whose job it was in the first place! Go figure! How in God's name do you choose these poor managers? One other thing that is happening increasingly is exclusive meetings are on the rise. " If you are not one of the special people you can't come to this meeting." This is pure elitism; these meetings exist to make certain folks think they are more important than the rest of us. Stop this practice; have open meetings like leading tech companies do unless secrecy is really needed. The company is closely monitoring employee actions. I saw this when a colleague emailed his notes to himself at home. The company considered going after the guy. The stuff he sent himself was mundane. Your being paranoid this is not the nsa. Quit the retribution drug testing. I know its called 'random' drug testing but we both know different. Speak out at your own risk.
