Pros
I worked as a summer camp counselor for Boy Scouts of America for three consecutive summers. Any summer camp position is a great resume builder. The camp I worked for had a good system of organization and the management was competent. It was fun working with the other staff, and we generally had a very high staff morale. I was empowered to be able to teach the merit badge classes the way I wanted to do it. I was always recognized for a job well done and heartily encouraged to apply each subsequent summer. You will have a lot of fun!
Cons
My second year I was appointed director of a program area only a few days before the staff training week started. The director that had been hired for the summer quit only a few days before camp began. In this situation, I was given too much autonomy and did not receive enough up-front training to be able to train my staff. I had to tackle the learning curve quickly in order to be successful, and I felt that I could have had more support from the senior staff in that aspect. Because of the nature of working at a camp, one can get tired of doing it. This happens at any camp and is not necessarily a drawback of this particular organization.
