Pros

Great learning experience and medical exposure. Build relationships with providers.

Cons

The pay in the northeast region has not caught up with the pay in other areas of the country. Places with significantly lower minimum wages have the same starting wages, and the wages do not grow as significantly as they should when you move up. This is a stepping-stone job, but it feels like the wages are taking advantage of pre-graduate students who need to save for their futures. When you work full time and are studying, there is virtually no way to successfully work another job without impacting your performance as a medical scribe. Poor management. The higher-level managers do not have the time to help train you if you do get a promotion. This leads to confusion and lags in productivity. As the lowest level employees in a medical facility, you will face discrimination. This was something I expected in health care; however, there is no clear way for scribes to understand how to combat this. If a patient says something racially charged or sexist, providers may not stand up for you, and you will likely have to see these patients often. Because the patients are commonly the ones treating you this way, and it is your job to remain quiet and help the patients feel comfortable, it is impossible to know how you are allowed to handle those situations. Despite discriminatory comments, providers have continued to have me go into patient rooms with notorious patients without standing up for me, or giving me the opportunity to step back.

Pros

Looks good on a resume.

Cons

Low pay and poor training. I did like three days of shadowing only, was only exposed to Cerner twice with very little time to explore. My trainer said my HPI’s were good… but then I got an email from the Chief Scribe saying I am missing too much, so I was pretty confused there. I’m with a different doctor every time, right out of the gate. Also, I only applied for one location, and was then assigned to four.
