Pros

For the person who likes to work independently, does not need full time work, or benefits, and just wants some extra income, it's not a bad place to work. The people are nice and I think they try to do their best for the clients and employees. They really don't promise their employees more than they can deliver. I am saying this for Salem only.

Cons

They make sure you stay part time, but that is pretty clear from the beginning. Work will sort of come and go - also clear from the beginning. There are no benefits. As with all in home care, the family dynamics of a client can get complicated, so you aren't just dealing with the client and the companies expectations. Senior Helpers is a for profit franchise, so although there is good intent here in Salem, they are forced to try and balance care with making a profit. But this is a systemic problem in health care in the US, not just Senior Helpers.

Pros

The owners are great. The management is very supportive.

Cons

I can use more hours because I get intrinsic satisfaction out of providing direct care for clients

Pros

Get to meet wonderful people. Get to see into peoples lives, and treasure getting to know them. Ask questions, get to hear about how they got to where they are, what their philosophies are, their life stories, their advice. The opportunity for connection is limitless.

Cons

Dementia! I learned to love working with dementia patients but be warned if it's your first job with them. Don't take what they say personally. I wish someone had told me that before my first position. It's not about you. It's about them. Second! Beeoches. There are so many old ladies you're going to run into who are BEEOCHES. Don't be afraid to tell the bossman that I'm sorry, this isn't a good fit. I was too afraid to say something and ended up staying with a little old lady who was H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS to work with for two years. Former CEO of a company. Beeoch! Stand up for yourself. If you don't know how, this job will teach you. You'll learn a lot about yourself if you don't know yourself very well!
