Pros

Serco does incredible work for governments around the world - its a great place to serve our country without wearing a uniform (20% of our employees are Veterans!) For a large company, we are very nimble and entrepreneurial - we can make rapid decisions and adjustments to market changes and opportunities. There is minimal bureaucracy and extensive diversity throughout the organization.

Cons

Serco tends to pay about 60 - 80% of salaries offered by our leading competitors and our benefits package is fairly expensive, though Cigna provides fairly broad coverage nationally. It is hard for high performing staff-level employees to get recognized and promoted. Age and experience seem to be valued by senior leadership over aptitude and innovation, and the top of the organization is quite old and almost entirely male.

Pros

You get to directly impact clients' success. "Decent" pay for the location.

Cons

Leadership will shift blame onto teams instead of taking accountability for their own shortcomings, and Program Managers won't take the time to seek clarification, leading to misinformed decisions and unfair outcomes. They are more focused on internal politics and protecting their seat than recognizing or rewarding actual contributions. You can work hard for years with consistently strong performance and still be passed over for promotion in favor of someone who has built the right relationships with management, even if the have not proven themselves yet. Support is subpar. Employees often spend more time troubleshooting issues themselves than receiving timely or effective assistance.
