Supportive team, but toxic leadership and unrealistic demands - Funeral Director Service Corporation International Employee Review

Pros

With anywhere, the team you work with and get to know, is going to be the best part of what you do. You show up for your peers and your families.

Cons

Local leadership does less than nothing to alleviate concerns or burn out. They stack the work of 6 individuals upon 2-3 and ask them to do it happily. Empty promises upon empty promises and the culture is abysmal & unnecessarily weird. They don’t care about their employees & they bank on the fact that people in this profession obviously care deeply about their families. The “leaders”count on that to guilt you and beat you into compliance. They have done a good job of industrializing a sacred profession and whittling it down into metrics & optics, with no regard for basic humanity.

Pros

Very supportive of the need for us to give back to the communities we serve. Great company, great benefits! (Even offers pet insurance!) If employees ever leave for a supposed better world at an independently owned provider, they almost always want to come back. This company strives to do the right thing for its employees and families we serve.

Cons

We are seen as “corporate.” (It is a corporation, but the benefits are immense for employees as well as families served - think things such as national transferability of plans, item for item, dollar for dollar.)

Pros

Some positives were the consistent hours, structured work environment, convenient location, and well maintained facility. I also appreciated seeing some diversity in the workplace.

Cons

The biggest con was the lack of support for employees who were still growing in the funeral industry. In my experience, the company expected loyalty and hard work, but did not provide the level of mentorship, patience, or professional development that a newer licensee or intern may need. The environment felt unforgiving, and I did not feel valued as a person or as an employee.
