Pros
I had really great teammates.
Cons
Gender equity at Shopify is just a title. I was really happy working alongside my teammates. We were always productive regardless of periodic changes in the manager and senior manager position. This dynamic changed drastically when I got pregnant that was diagnosed as a high risk pregnancy. I was refused to use my "flexible vacations" toward a much needed mental/physical break so I can focus on mine and my infant's health. While in the Shopify culture is it totally acceptable and praised to use vacation days toward playing games at home. Shopify's policy around STD is so vague and contradicts the health insurance policy and I top of that I received minimal support from my manager and the Wellness team to reach any clarification. I was constantly under a lot of pressure to meet work exception while struggling with numerous health issues including Covid and while pregnant. I was relieved to get laid off at 5 months pregnant cause it became clear to me that I was going to get zero support from my manager and the Wellness team . Shopify severance package had a 1 week deadline during which I was sick with Covid and hospitalized. Deadline extension was not an option because Talent team never got back to me. My severance was cut back by 25% for no obvious reason. Shopify was a great place to work until the moment I got pregnant which is the most natural human decision. This experience has made me question Shopify's claim for their advocacy for gender equity.
