Pros
Learned a great deal about the maritime industry and also learned about the improper way to run a business.
Cons
Some of the people at this company are wonderful; however, the owner and his wife are the most horrible people I have ever met in my life. They both treat the employees like crap, day in and day out. If you are not working 12+ hours per day, you are not performing well. It doesn't matter that you are efficient, at Signet Maritime great efficiency means you have poor work ethic because you are not slaving away at your desk until the wee hours of the morning. Women are seen as sub-par to the men at this company. A woman with the same duties, skills, and seniority level as a man get paid far lower than the man would be paid. If you are seen with nice personal items (a nice vehicle, nice clothing, jewelry, etc.) the owner assumes that he is paying you too much money and tries to decrease your salary. He puts a huge workload on every person at this company; each employee is responsible for the duties of 5-6 positions at a time. No one is compensated at a level to match their workload. The owner constantly makes derogatory and sexual comments towards the female employees. If he finds anything about your personal life he will humiliate you in front of the entire company and spread rumors about you. If his wife doesn't like something about you, or if she doesn't agree with something you are trying to do to make the company better, you are immediately pushed out. I saw this happen to several people during my tenure. The turnover is so high at this company that if you work there for 1 year, you will have been employed there longer than most.
