[Opening Note] This is the kinder version of this review. The first draft had more smoke, more fire, and possibly a few literary crimes. I rewrote it to stay respectful, honest, and fair while still giving future candidates a clear picture of what the experience felt like from my perspective. [Pay] The pay is not competitive with the industry. You can start as an associate engineer, work an exhausting schedule, and still be lucky to exceed $100k per year. The schedule developed by senior operations leadership is commonly referred to as the “6-6-6”: 6 AM to 6 PM, 6 days a week. After working that schedule for a year at $30/hr, an associate engineer may be offered around $80k salary. Do the math. [Micromanagement] The micromanagement has been severely underplayed in previous reviews. In my experience, senior operations leadership operates with a level of control that is exhausting. There are constant questions, frequent interruptions, and a general feeling that technical employees are being asked to justify basic tool knowledge that experienced engineers and technicians already understand. For example, a wet process tool may have multiple chemical pathways, recipe-dependent behavior, and valve logic that makes perfect sense to the people who work with the equipment every day. To experienced technicians and engineers, this is normal equipment behavior. It is not sorcery. It is plumbing, valves, recipes, and control logic. However, conversations around these topics often became far more difficult than they needed to be. Simple explanations could turn into long, draining discussions where the technical team had to walk through details step by step, only to feel like the explanation was still not landing. This was not a one-off experience. It felt like a broader pattern. “Nanomanagement” is the best word I can use for it. Not micromanagement. Nanomanagement. Smaller, sharper, and somehow able to get into every corner of your day. It is not the kind of leadership style that helps skilled people do their best work. It slowly drains the people actually keeping the factory running. [Dying Team] When previous reviews mention that a large percentage of process engineers left, I believe this leadership style was a major factor. The equipment team has also been hit hard. Since December, more than 70% of the equipment team appears to have been lost. That kind of attrition does not happen in a vacuum. A fair question for any candidate to ask is: what changed? Unfortunately, it feels like season 6 of a TV series that sold out a long time ago. The plot no longer makes sense. Characters disappear without explanation. New executives enter the scene every episode. Meanwhile, the people who actually know how to keep the machines alive are quietly written off the show. The company continues adding managers, directors, and vice presidents, but the people who maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and improve the tools are leaving. At some point, you have to ask: whom will they preside over? Whom will they manage? It makes no sense to lose people with direct tool knowledge while expanding layers of management above them. Every tool has a mean time between failure and a mean time to repair. When experienced people leave, those failures do not disappear. They accumulate. Anyone worth their weight in salt should understand that. Eventually, entropy wins. [Schedule] There are no real days off. The 6-6-6 schedule already consumes most of your life, but it can easily become 6-6-6+1. The expectation often feels like constant availability, even when you are not officially on shift. If leadership contacts you late at night and you do not respond, do not be surprised if it becomes a topic the next day. Performance does not protect you. Reliability does not protect you. Going above and beyond does not protect you. You could be the rock star employee, the golden child, the chosen one, and it still may not matter. The expectation is availability, availability, availability. [Final Thoughts] No one wanted to leave. Many people cared deeply about the tools, the team, and the factory. But when talented engineers and technicians are pushed too hard, watched too closely, and treated as replaceable, they eventually walk away. A factory is not kept alive by titles. It is kept alive by the people who know the tools, hear the weird noises, notice the pressure drifting, remember the last time a valve failed, and understand which problems are actually urgent. When those people leave, the building may still be standing, but the soul of the operation starts leaking out through the exhaust line. That is what this place felt like to me.
