Pros

At the same time as interviewing with Canary, I interviewed or met with almost all NYC startups at a similar stage. I immediately felt "at home" at Canary. It's tough to put into words what makes up the Canary culture and type of people, but values like "Have strong opinions but hold them loosely" or "Trust each other" aren't just put into a Google Doc somewhere, they are lived. It's also the caliber of people - everyone is really smart, comes from places like Apple, Ideo, Google, and they are qualified not just for their current role but completely qualified to own their responsibilities even as they grow quickly with Canary's growth. This focus on "who is the best" in hiring means that we have incredibly diversity - languages spoken, gender, backgrounds (fine arts in the engineering team), hobbies and hidden talents (juggling, basketball, coffee roasting, ...), we have people in hoodies and people in blazers (though do leave the suit at home when you come to interview!) And most importantly, everyone is here because they believe in the mission of Canary and the meaning that that brings to their work. Which is really the second big "pro" of working at Canary: You are making history if you join Canary. Canary is not a "smart home" company that is about connecting the home, Canary is creating real meaning in people's lives by catching burglars as much as baby's first steps. The product is solving a real problem, and that's why we're in thousands of stores and growing quickly. There are few startups that have such a great opportunity to deliver something meaningful to millions of people, and Canary is set up well to continue this growth. When you're offered a seat on a rocket ship...

Cons

This applies to most experiences in a high growth company, but since you'll be invested and passionate about the company's growth, it will lead you to prioritize "working" over other things, though frankly it often doesn't feel like "work" anyway. It also means that you might take it personally if anyone ever says something negative about the product or the company, in which case there are many "haters gonna hate" gifs on the internet.

My manager motivates me to pursue my career goals, too. Witnessing the dedication to talent cultivation within the organization is inspiring and reassuring.

Striking a balance between workload demands and pursuing further training or certifications can sometimes pose a challenge.
