Pros
The Canary software team is filled with very smart people, most of whom are more than willing to share their knowledge and experience. I've learned so much about so many areas of software by virtue of working with such a diverse and knowledgeable team. Given the nature of the product (IoT, distributed systems), the work is always interesting, and I've seen some of our most junior team members rise to leadership positions or spearhead mission critical projects. Management and senior team members are usually open and eager to hear ideas for solving the problem at hand from all of the team members. The opportunities for growth are unbeatable. This is not your typical web dev job. The fairly permissive remote work policy, catered lunches, occasional chair massages, snacks and alcohol, and team parties are definitely nice perks.
Cons
The company has an unlimited vacation policy and management is generally permissive in this regard, but I see unhealthy work/life habits from some individuals or even entire teams that contribute to somewhat of a culture of overwork. If you set boundaries from the outset and add value, people will respect that, but it's easy to get sucked into working 50+ hour weeks and taking a paltry amount of time off every year. Management should be more proactive in enforcing healthy work/life balance for team members. I've seen habits of overwork at this company lead to negativity, burnout, and clouded judgment that has affected the entire team. Luckily, there are also lots of team members who are more enlightened and encouraging about maintaining a healthy work/life balance and working efficiently rather than logging hours.
