Pros
It is a fairly secure job. There is chance of moderate upward mobility if you are a Claims Specialist. Very good training program....not counting the OJT. It is a good way to get into the Federal Government. Excellent place to learn about public policy.
Cons
This is purely dependent on the office you work for and management within that office. 1. Heavy work and impossible workload 2. The lack of staff makes it difficult to take vacation time especially during holidays such as Christmas you are likely to only get one day off... so if you have kids this can very difficult. Days off are given/assigned based on tenure or time within the agency in (other words older individuals with out children) get them. Newer employees are at the bottom of the tolen pole. 3. You have to deal with a massive amounts of angry disgruntled customers because of high wait times and lack of staff. 4. You are capped at a certain GS level its very difficult to move up from that level. (A position Change is basically required to do this) 5. You will feel under valued unappreciated by some members of management. 6. High Level of Micromanagement 7. You work level is much higher than your pay-grade ALL THIS AMOUNTS TO LOW MORALE
