Pros
Telework. That's really it. Everyone in my component only stays b/c of the telework.
Cons
SSA has adopted the Amazon model re: not caring about burn out of their employees b/c there are always new ones for GS-12 pay. Mgmt knows the entire agency is a hostile work environment for anyone who doesn't come from a clique of incompetence. Don't waste your time with this agency if you don't have to. You'll be doing a lot of work and answering to idiots who get promoted b/c of who their friends are or their "openness" and not their competence, ability to do the work, policy knowledge, etc. SSA has been undermined to the point that hiring, retaining and promoting the extremely incompetent is seen as normal. We have mgers who can't figure out how to get decision notices to print x many mos FCS! You'll also get sick of hearing mgers saying, "I think we're doing a really good job!" You can't have the backlogs that this agency has and be doing a good job, so more evidence of how inept mgmt is. Also, the extreme quantity over minimal quality rules exist throughout the agency, including in the DQBs (quality assurance branches). You can pass a million cases but lose a million RPCs and be considered much more of an asset to the agency than someone who actually knows the policy and gets the determs right. Quality is such a joke these days. They filled the "consistency cadre" staff with the least experienced employees, which obviously defeats their purpose.
