Pros
Disclaimer: at the time of writing, DOGE is in the process of shaking things up - we still have not reported back to full in-person work yet, but that is coming. It's hard to compete with SSA when it comes to a cushy lifestyle: flexible hours, great pay and benefits, nice facilities (free gym!), telework and job security (at the moment; will be ending soon - there is a bit of panic about what DOGE will do, although I think it's unlikely they will lay off many people at SSA since it is a politically popular program). We have access to fairly new technology. The management is very empowering to employees to help the direction of their careers, and get them into roles they enjoy.
Cons
It is a large bureaucracy. Various IT projects are arbitrarily started, stopped, or pivoted based on the whims of executives. Many IT projects are pointless and frivolous. Our technology stack has modernized a lot in the past 10 years, but we still have a lot of the old red tape holding us back. There is lots of technical debt. Projects move very slowly and the teams tend to be bloated and not lean.
