I'm glad that during your 8 years you were able to access training and development in your field, but there should never be any issues with how you are treated or the application of company policies. Though it appears you're no longer an employee, I encourage any employee who feels there is an issue with treatment or policies to reach out to either HR or the Office of Employment rights to discuss your concerns and receive guidance for how to proceed.
