Pros

If you're a server, it's nice to pick up shifts when you want to. But don't expect to leave when your shift is over. Events almost never end on time and you're expected to stay until everything is cleaned up and finished.

Cons

Sometimes, you end up working 17+ hour shifts. You can't fulfill job requirements and take a break. You get in trouble for not taking a break and get in trouble if job requirements are not fulfilled due to taking a break. In reality, you receive hardly any support or help from management. During our largest event of the year, the director said, " I would help, but I'm not wearing the right shoes for this." If you take time off, you are then punished with fewer hours. Toxic management. Limited career development if you are not one of the favorites or play a fake political game. No training or company standards. It is chaos and doesn't benefit anybody's physical or mental health working there. There is a high turnover rate for a reason. The pay also looks good, and you are usually promised overtime, which is true. However, you don't see overtime pay because about half of it is taxed (I think it is taxed as a bonus, not overtime). You will work yourself to death trying to see the overtime paycheck, which is never what you want it to be. So, the extra work is not worth it.

Pros

The work experience and professional networking.

Cons

The operations manager, assistant general manager, general manager, catering managers are some of the most abusive people I’ve ever had the misfortune to work with. How they haven’t been sued for workplace harassment or for creating a hostile work environment is surprising.
