Amazing opportunity, but not easy - Field Energy Consultant SolarCity Employee Review

Pros

I truly believed in what the company was doing. The company is genuine about making a change in the energy sector and how people consume electricity. It was a huge privilege to be part of the green energy revolution on the ground. Major pros: freedom to structure schedule and sales approach (sales job), no ceiling on commissions, company car. Peace of mind when laying down head on the pillow about honest and good work.

Cons

- Engineering and operations team often does not understand subtleties of local market - sometimes makes it difficult to keep the customer happy after sale has been made because of poor communication. - I was a mediocre sales person so I had to bust my chops 7 days a week to make quota. - Company grew so fast that I felt like a number at times. - Managers are newly-promoted star sales consultants, so don't have the skills to inspire, lead, coach, etc. - Turnover is pretty high. - When you leave, they keep your outstanding commissions. PAY ATTENTION TO THE FINE PRINT WHEN YOU'RE SIGNING THE SALES CONTRACT. I felt like I was cheated out of rightfully-earned money. If done again, I would not sign this, even if it meant not getting the job.

Pros

Just to quantify my review a bit, I am within the top 10% of inside sales reps within our 12,000 person company. It is a great place to work and people doing well ARE able to make good money here. The executive team ALWAYS has a platform for reps to help make SolarCity a better place every quarter. They involve the top 20 reps each quarter in various ways to help their peers through an interactive group called Team Elite. Executives, VP's, Directors, and Managers are always willing to help and go to bat when there are issues with things that need to be fixed. The direction of the company is consistent and although the company is large, decision makers work as hard as possible to steer the big ship quickly when necessary.

Cons

Knee jerk reactions with decision making at a director level create issues from time to time. Culture has had its ups and downs due to HUGE growth last year and subsequent high attrition rates.
