Pros

- Engineering autonomy: varies by team, but in general you were able to build something the way you wanted to, using the tech/framework you thought was best, while working very closely with stakeholders in operations - Lots of product responsibility for engineers. You're included in new feature work from very early on, and it's great to have a say at that stage. I learned a whole lot about engineering and architecture. - (Esp. in 2018-19) Incredible energy and a sense of being part of something big with a great group of people - Lots of opportunities to travel. Good culture of go-and-see when it comes to building things that the various city teams would use, and to shadow work being done by folks who use the tech we built.

Cons

- The other side of moving quickly: as the company grew, it got more difficult to get buy-in for ambitious projects, or time-intensive work, even if it was the better call long-term - Very difficult to get a raise, and there was a tendency for middle management to over-promise without delivering during review cycles. One of the reasons I left. - Non-tech employees weren't treated too well and often faced terrible work-life balance. Employees outside SF HQ felt distinctly second-class. - Layoffs in March 2020 were abrupt and very poorly handled, and another reason I left (later in the year). One-quarter (ish?) of the company was shown the door on a Saturday with no real severance to speak of. Or healthcare, in a pandemic! Difficult to justify (the treatment, not necessarily the layoff itself) given the huge fundraising round and hiring push that followed just a few months later.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, though we’re saddened to learn that some of your experience was less than positive. We want to acknowledge the sentiment that at times there has been a divide between SF and other offices, and note that we’re taking active steps to create more connection between all offices and teams. Francis and members of SLT have prioritized visiting our cities in person over the last year, as much as is safely possible, to make sure leadership understands the experiences of, and connects with, our front line employees. This will continue to happen -- likely even more frequently as travel restrictions ease and the public health issues are addressed. We will also soon be launching “Day in the Life” profiles of individuals across the business to provide greater organizational visibility into different employees’ day-to-day. We hope that this fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of different roles, whether front-line or HQ, and the incredible contributions they make to our company. We weren’t perfect in our response to COVID-19, but we also believe this is not a justification or excuse for every business decision. There were certainly very impactful learnings that came out of the pandemic. In the spirit of continuous improvement, we have updated our leadership principles and are actively working to better articulate and uphold our commitments to all employees. We are grateful many of our furloughed employees chose to return and continue their careers with Sonder. We welcome you to reach out hrbp@sonder.com if you’d like to talk with us more about your concerns or offer any more feedback.

Culture was great. We had a lot of fun building something that could have gone to the moon. Best employer I ever had until we closed our doors.

Cons

It's closed now. Unfortunately had to happen very abruptly,
