Good intentions with poor outcomes. - Software Engineer Spok Employee Review

Lack of culture since going fulltime remote. When the CEO made the decision to go fulltime remote I suspect he didn't consider the nuclear effect it would have on whatever culture was left at Spok after 1.5 years of working from home. This segways into the biggest issue with the CEO....he's an idealist and his idealism gets in the way of making sound business decisions. At the end of the day the most important thing in an engineering department is not whether or not you have to commute to the office or whether you're comfortable...... It's team unity and cohesion. At Spok, both of the this pillars of a successful working environment are completely gone from what I have gathered. It should be noted that Vince seems like he means well and seems from all accounts to be a genuinely kind human being. Unfortunately that doesn't translate into an effective leader in this situation. We often receive emails about current social justice issues that leadership seems to be spending a lot of time thinking about, all while the engineering moral continues to fall and employee turnover increases. The job of Spok's leaders is to lead this company, not to try and solve world hunger or racism. While these things are noble pursuits and could be tackled if all aspects of the company we're healthy....they're not. I don't know anything so take this advice with grain of salt......Start making the hard decisions. Put the company ahead of people's comfort. Stop spending time and resource on things that aren't business related. Stop being so transparent. There is a reason that executive level positions exist....to insulate the rest of us from the tough decisions you face about the fate of the company. When you tell us absolutely everything that is going on at the top level of the company you think you're doing us a favor....what you're actually doing is eroding the confidence we have in you. You're the CEO, that means you're the captain, act accordingly.
