Pros

Working at Staples is an awesome job. The work environment (at least in my store) is fairly relaxed although professional is always key. You are always encouraged to sell, but customer service (within means) is always the main focus. There is a lot of product training to always ensure you know the products you are selling. Almost every week I am given the opportunity to work a few extra hours. The management in my store is spectacular and I really don't think anyone could get better management in any other retail store. I always feel that I am an appreciated employee rather than just a number.

Cons

The starting pay is minimum wage, and the pay raises are terrible. Back to school hours are terrible, I sometimes won't get home from work until 11pm. It's designed like a warehouse and there is a huge sales floor to maintain so for some people this may seem a bit of a daunting task at first. Employee discount kind of sucks. It seems like management has to jump through a bunch of hoops to fire someone, even if their job performance is extremely poor which means you may get stuck with someone who doesn't do their job. For Easy Techs working on computers, the turnaround time required to get a system done is too short. Yes it makes the customer happy, but that means an EasyTech has to work on multiple computers in a much shorter time and that can be quite stressful.

Pros

You will acquire genuinely useful AR and account management skills including Oracle, MS Office, customer support, reporting, and general O2C fundamentals. These skills will help you in future roles and look good on a résumé. To be transparent: those skills will come in handy when you’re searching for a new job later — because based on team conditions, you’ll likely be looking again within a year.

Cons

The Escalation Specialist role was originally part of the Center of Excellence (COE) and fully remote. It is no longer remote. Management relies heavily on weekly “validation” scorecards to evaluate performance. These scorecards often feel subjective and based more on opinion than actual workload, metrics, or demonstrated knowledge. They do not accurately reflect your true performance or skill level. Recognition tends to go to the same small group of individuals (primarily within Vendor Management), even though the Specialists are responsible for the majority of the day‑to‑day work and issue resolution. This creates an uneven sense of visibility and appreciation across the team. You deserve better!
