Pros

At the corporate level I do feel like people care about me on a personal and professional level. As always, this will always depend on your direct management. I do feel like I am a valued employee of the company (although my opinion about this is slowly changing). Staples has been generous to me in terms of my compensation, but I know this is not true for others in the company. I have been given a lot of opportunities to learn about the business and grow professionally.

Cons

As budgets have gotten tighter, Staples has begun to whittle away their benefit programs over the past 5 years. They seem like small changes, but have really added up. They "tried" to make it a better place to work by allowing jeans all the time in the corporate office, but this isn't much compared to changes to 401k matching (only once per year), spousal surcharge on health insurance ($100/month if your spouse's employer offers benefits), changes to employee stock purchase program and discontinuing stock grants for certain levels. I'm not sure how this compares to other companies, but it makes me feel less valued as an employee.

Pros

You will acquire genuinely useful AR and account management skills including Oracle, MS Office, customer support, reporting, and general O2C fundamentals. These skills will help you in future roles and look good on a résumé. To be transparent: those skills will come in handy when you’re searching for a new job later — because based on team conditions, you’ll likely be looking again within a year.

Cons

The Escalation Specialist role was originally part of the Center of Excellence (COE) and fully remote. It is no longer remote. Management relies heavily on weekly “validation” scorecards to evaluate performance. These scorecards often feel subjective and based more on opinion than actual workload, metrics, or demonstrated knowledge. They do not accurately reflect your true performance or skill level. Recognition tends to go to the same small group of individuals (primarily within Vendor Management), even though the Specialists are responsible for the majority of the day‑to‑day work and issue resolution. This creates an uneven sense of visibility and appreciation across the team. You deserve better!
