Pros

The people are the best thing about SunTrust. I've never worked with a more dedicated, hard working team. There will always be top performers and bottom performers, but on average, SunTrust has some of the best people in the industry and they have really done a great job identifying servant leaders in the last few months. I think the company has a great trajectory because they really do care about clients and employees alike and this will always be their core. They want everyone to truly feel financially confident. The benefits are great. Most folks in non-client facing roles have an opportunity to telecommute. The principles and standards they set aren't just mantras to look good, they put their money/investments where their mouths are and have stood up the highly successful OnUp movement. This is a free service, and doesn't gain profit for the company, showing that they are not like all the other banks/financial institutions. They've had copycats, but they invented this. When you bank and work for SunTrust, you know you are valued and that they care about you. Its why I wanted to work there to start with and I had it affirmed over the years I was employed.

Cons

There are some tough individuals in the leadership team and many have strong personalities. Some of them manage with an iron fist, but to their credit, they won't ask you to do something they wouldn't do. There is a lot of tenure and many seasoned employees there who are not held accountable and are just waiting for retirement, some recently left which helps. For a young, hungry professional, this can be a negative because you have high expectations for yourself and those around you. People have different ideas of what hard work means....And managers don't seem to have much power to remove folks that are coasting through. Their hands are tied, even when they want to take action. The company is worried too much about efficiency and cost cutting right now to make really big break throughs in growing the business. Too many folks on the sidelines watching the game instead of getting their hands dirty and doing the leg work. Not enough folks for the work that is needed, and if this doesn't improve, many people will look for other opportunities. This needs improvement and with the new leadership i think it will improve, but it's really a tough company to work for until it improves. Work life balance was once the biggest pro, but in the last 2 years its gotten much worse and is trending to a con. Turn this around again and I think you'll retain more talent.
