Pros

As a Junior Graphic Designer at Surya, I learned many things. I have walked away with many priceless, institutional lessons that are a foundational part of any well-established career. When it comes to working with people who will never change their ways, I must still find ways to learn from them and utilize that knowledge daily. I have learned that I am not myself if I cannot create. God made me capable of creating some magnificent works. However, my capabilities and talents were not meant to be utilized during my time at Surya because they did not deserve it. This is not somewhere you want to stay long-term but it is a great, very challenging place to start. Because of my time at Surya, I am now well prepared to provide the upmost effort and passion for my new employer that has already spent more on my “Welcome!” goodies for one day, than Surya ever spent investing in me in two years.

Cons

When I first started working for this company, I was SO (blindly) excited. I’d finally been given the chance to start my career! On day one, my new teammates shared with me their (condolences) advice and (grievances) experiences on becoming the new Jr. Graphic Designer at Surya. Not long after I started, I was able to join in on the (cynicism) laughter and (outcries) jokes about everyday grief and stress. I was eventually entrusted with the (mind-numbing) exciting responsibility of managing the print ads in the some 11 publications Surya ads were featured. The (non-existent) approval process of producing the advertisements required learning how to work with a woman of few (mostly degrading, condescending) words. Her (poor) communication skills contributed to the ongoing (suffering) success of the marketing department at Surya. She had a (seemingly) respectable yet intimidating presence that early on, motivated me to try my damnedest to “get it right.” I must’ve done something right (nope) because I received Employee of the Month! I even got a (as much as your Christmas bonus will be) $100 bonus! Then, I was given the (mandated) opportunity of managing the digital advertising segment (plus print, minus appreciation). I had (absolutely) no experience with digital marketing but did receive (one hour) training from the digital marketing specialist before he left (escaped) to pursue another career opportunity. Having received this training, I continued to work with (FOR) my supervisor in creating a continuous (-ly inconsistent) line of messaging across all channels of communication (except everything). When I was unsure of content, she was quick to (demand) provide the most applicable messaging or photography to be used. She was a great (-ly misguided) person to work with (FOR). Everyone deserves a chance to start their career. Starting yours at Surya could be the biggest (mistake) opportunity for those actively seeking new or first employment. In closing (hallelujah), Surya is a (HORRIFIC) place to look for that next career move!
