Pros

Work-life balance. Respectable hours. Ownership over projects. The opportunity to contribute to the life of a project exists.

Cons

Work can sometimes feel siloed. Support systems rarely exist. Unfortunately, there aren't that many subject matter experts in any given department. The ones that do exist are tasked out or are too busy to help. Although the opportunity to contribute to projects exists it's sometimes looked at with little weight meaning if a manager thinks it's bad idea they will dismiss your idea. There is also a very real and very apparent toxic work environment that promotes those incapable of performing their job. Sometimes promotions come to those in a nepotistic way. Also, this toxic culture is overwhelmingly in favor of personal relationships. If you aren't a friend or casually a work acquaintance then you can have zero expectations of advancement.

Pros

There were no pros that I know of.

Cons

The company would set the maximum hours allowed on a specific publication project, and that cap was always insufficient, so the freelancer would be expected to work for free, despite scope creep. Also, timelines were unreasonably short. Poor communication with management meant things took longer than they should have. I left after one project.
