Salary isn’t even competitive with the current market - Psychotherapist Talkiatry Employee Review

Pros

You get to choose what type of schedule you’d like. The insurance benefits aren’t as costly as other places.

Cons

The pay is nowhere near what the market is currently paying, especially in competitive markets. It’s not sustainable. However, I saw a new posting for a California therapist starting at $90k - but all of the seasoned therapists are currently at a salary base pay of $60-70,000. Many therapists are forced to have additional jobs to make ends meet, which is completely unfair in comparison to what leadership and psychiatrists are getting paid. I have a Masters degree and someone with a Bachelors degree is getting paid six figures. They say that the therapists are just as “significant” as the psychiatric and administrative staff, but their actions demonstrate otherwise. The incentive compensation is a complete setup - you can’t take any PTO or sick time in addition to ensuring you don’t have any cancellations in your schedule. Even then you’d only see about $1,000 and it’s inconsistent. It can feel quite discouraging to say the least. You’re expected to manage a pretty heavy caseload and now patients are able to self schedule themselves on to your schedule - so autonomy is slowly becoming nonexistent.

Thank you for sharing your experience and feedback. We genuinely appreciate the important role all of our clinicians play in the care and outcomes of our patients and we recognize the dedication and commitment it takes to do this work. I do want to clarify a few points that are referenced. We do offer our clinicians tenure-based increases and our compensation structure is reviewed regularly to ensure competitiveness within the markets of our practice. In addition to base pay and incentive, we also offer a comprehensive total rewards package that includes health benefits, paid time off, and performance based incentive plans. We are always looking for ways to improve the clinician experience, feedback like yours plays an important role in these efforts. We encourage you to speak with your Lead or Operations partner to better understand your concerns and suggestions. Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback.

Pros

The work is straightforward. The clients are mostly reasonable. I prescribe a lot of stimulants in states where I can prescribe them. The electronic medical record and the resources contained within make it easy enough to do it. A good job at this. They offer the use of an AI scribe to help with documentation. You can be involved as much or as little as you want to in activities beyond direct patient care. Talkiatry chooses to make its money through the use of the psychotherapy add-on code. You're incentivized to spend time talking with your patients, which seems like a win for everyone.

Cons

Figuring out how the performance portion of the pay structure works is challenging and takes several months. You also take a significant hit in taxes because of the the back that the performance portion of your salary is paid as a bonus which is taxed at 30%. This is higher than the base pay tax rate. I'm hopeful that I'll see the significant tax return next April.
