Pluses and minuses - Technical Project Manager Tata Consultancy Services Employee Review

Pros

TCS pays for bench time (most consulting firms don't anymore). When an assignment ends, they work diligently to find a new one. They have a good, extensive online training program with Skillsoft, including employee access to Books24x7.com.

Cons

Health benefits are average at best. They only pay for 1 industry association membership, and only up to a mere $75, leaving the employee to pay the rest or for more than 1. Their employee web platform for accessing all employee information is poorly designed and not very intuitive. A large percentage of management, as well as the consultants, are from India, for whom English is a second language, and it can be difficult to understand them at times, especially on conference bridge calls. The salary was significantly below industry averages. They did not have a good technical advancement program.

Pros

Large client base. Talented people, have "cracked the code" on offshoring development and support.

Cons

For anyone used to working in US-based firms, the culture and politics will be difficult to understand and navigate. Internal policies and systems focus on the offshore delivery center model. Roles in the US do not fit into that mold, and obtaining approvals for simple expenses can require weeks and insanely high approval chains given the size of TCS. I needed approval from a global division head (a CEO direct-report) just to pay for a short training course. Missions of different departments are not clearly defined, so overlap and conflict are common.
