Pros
Great work-life balance, great coworkers, and a generally positive work environment. Decent PTO policy, decent healthcare benefits, an annual company trip, and opportunities for professional development.
Cons
Working at Protection Plus could be a good stepping stone for someone early in their career. But I wouldn't plan to stay there for the long haul, no matter what they preach.
I'd describe the overall leadership style at this company as chaotic, inconsistent, and inexperienced. Part of that comes down to the other reviews mentioning rampant nepotism — they're not wrong. Most of upper management is there because they're family or long-time family friends, which shows up in how decisions get made.
That same leadership also has a strange aversion to remote work, even though a good portion of the workforce is fully remote. So despite talking a good game about flexibility and work-life balance, you have to be intentional about protecting your own boundaries. You won't get reprimanded for skipping overtime, but every week they spotlight an employee who went above and beyond — usually someone who sacrificed their own time off to do it. The message you get isn't always the message they say out loud.
That inconsistency extends to staffing, too. Over time, a clear pattern emerged: a hiring frenzy before tax season, followed by layoffs once things slowed down. Most notably, they had one of their biggest rounds of layoffs to date, affecting employees across multiple departments.
Underneath all of this is a company that's still figuring out how to grow. It's a reactive environment when it comes to product launches and other initiatives, which I'd chalk up to rapid growth paired with a small-family-business mentality. That mindset has its upsides, but interdepartmental communication often fell to the wayside, and "emergency" projects popped up that could have easily been avoided with better planning.
If you're looking to get your foot in the door in the tax industry, or gain experience in a new field, this could be a solid stepping stone. Just don't get too comfortable.
