Pros
No call. True part-time work available. Pre-Covid: 80% of the patient encounters are truly gratifying as a practitioner. Flexible hours depending on your contract. No contact with boss unless you initiate it. No annual reviews. You can pay off your debt.
Cons
No annual reviews. EMR not linked to either local hospital system. Medical benefits must be through your spouse. No raise. Ever. RVU standard for bonus pay is unsafe and therefore unattainable. 12-hour shifts = when the doors are open. Then the doors close and there may still be 8+ patients in the building, plus charting to do. Always a mad dash at the end of the shift. Saw 92 pts with 1 midlevel and was teaching a new mid-level hire, yesterday. Had to find own N95s for first several weeks of COVID. After nearly 2 years, COVID protocols for efficient patient flow still don’t exist. You are practicing in a vacuum. Very little communication other than the grapevine. Turnover is about every 2-3 years...
