Pros

Minimum hours required. Steady Pay. Decent Benefits. Not much else. If you would like to earn a paycheck and not have much stress, the state is the place for it.

Cons

Almost every department is run by political appointees, who know very little of what is going on. Upper management does not meddle in the work of peons, unless something goes wrong. Every few years there is a massive shake up at the top, and several key processes will be changed, then changed back(but not all the way back). People in middle management tend to be low motivation people or people who are not the brightest bulbs. The may in middle management is weak and it attracts people who want the title. So sometimes you end up with power hungry dumb dumbs. I was directly involved in hiring and in most situations, people were hired because they were the only ones 'qualified' to accept the position. It was super depressing.

Pros

Good work-life balance, great pay, excellent leadership and great people. TN State Government invests in employee development much more than any other company I have worked for.

Cons

Sometimes things move slowly due to red-tape.
