Cliquish leadership culture and weak management support - Senior Research Administrator The Broad Institute Employee Review

Pros

Work with leading scientists and large research programs. Exposure to complex grant portfolios and sponsor requirements across federal and foundation funding. Role builds strong knowledge of grant management, compliance, budgeting, and proposal support. Staff gain experience with large-scale research administration operations. Institutional reputation adds value to a resume.

Cons

Sponsored Research Leadership management culture feels cliquish and exclusionary. Sponsored Research Leadership groups operate in tight circles which limits transparency and trust. Workload runs high while recognition and advancement stay limited. Communication from management often lacks clarity and consistency. Decisions feel uneven across teams and depend on internal relationships rather than performance. Extremely high turnover, new hires inherit portfolios, processes, and unresolved issues left by departing staff.

Pros

Benefits, such as PTO and health, are fantastic.

Cons

A pro and a con are there are rarely set ways to do things. You can pave your own way, but others could be paving a way to the same destination and just creating more paths when it would be better to work together.

Thank you for your thoughtful review! We love that you feel the autonomy to pave your own way here, and recognize that also can present its own challenge with duplicating efforts.
