Pros

It was a great place to work before it got too big and splintered across multiple buildings in Cambridge. Funding cuts laid off a lot of good people in the department I worked in.

Cons

I was there for nearly 11 years and watched this organization evolve from a small group of a few hundred collaborative scientists, located in one building, to over a thousand full time employees spread across five different buildings. The culture shifted from jeans and t-shirt to a more corporate, business attire atmosphere with the equivalent type of competitive, anti-collaborative attitudes. There was still collaboration in some departments, but it was shifting away from this model.

Hi, this is Chelsea from Human Resources - thank you for your feedback! Our Broadie community has been rapidly expanding over the past several years, and this growth has empowered our scientific groups to tackle a wide range of large-scale projects to solve some of the toughest biological problems. This growth does come with the challenge of understanding how to grow while still maintaining the culture and community that our Broadies love. To address this, we have put together a team of people for a project called ‘Be Big/Feel Small’, with the mission to understand the needs of our community and how we can improve communication, resources, and collaboration across the institute. This will be an ongoing initiative and we are determined to provide support to our community as we all adapt to these changes. I wish you every success in your career and I would be happy to discuss further if your path ever leads you back to the Broad!

Pros

Benefits, such as PTO and health, are fantastic.

Cons

A pro and a con are there are rarely set ways to do things. You can pave your own way, but others could be paving a way to the same destination and just creating more paths when it would be better to work together.

Thank you for your thoughtful review! We love that you feel the autonomy to pave your own way here, and recognize that also can present its own challenge with duplicating efforts.
