Many smart people and interactions with MIT/Harvard labs, good funding, and some interesting large-scale projects.

Cons

Excessive arrogance, politics, bureaucracy, and inertia. Often feels like it's pretending to be a company, without the corresponding compensation.

Pros

Benefits, such as PTO and health, are fantastic.

Cons

A pro and a con are there are rarely set ways to do things. You can pave your own way, but others could be paving a way to the same destination and just creating more paths when it would be better to work together.
