Pros

The mission of this organization is extraordinary, with research into some of most serious and challenging diseases faced by mankind. Branching out into clinical genomic work as well as research. Many opportunities available.

Cons

Consider very carefully if you relocated to Bar Harbor. It is remote. Beautiful in the summer, but getting on and off the island is a hassle with traffic. In the winter the town practically closes up. While they help you move to Bar Harbor you could be stuck in an area of Maine with few alternative jobs if you have a working spouse or if things don't work out. Long time employees are clickish. They can go outside of your management channel to commiserate with other long time employees and seek to widen problems. This out of band grapevine is not addressed and makes navigating the political waters very difficult. While JAX is a non-profit, areas are run with all the ferocity of a for profit enterprise. You need to deliver 110%, however there is little guidance from senior management or feedback to know if you are actually doing well or coaching to address problems.

Pros

Good pay and benefits are decent

Cons

Long commutes with tight time accountability due to newer rules. No more leniency for weather or traffic related tardiness that is common in Maine. Constantly changing rules and expectations are making the job impossible. Failure to meet new expectations lead to no finishes or raises or tuition reimbursement. Forced overtime in Ellsworth location with so.e employees being sent from Bar Harbor to cover. Seems like a sinking ship and I would not recommend anyone I liked for a job here.
